Purpose of the Job
The Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and controlling end-to-end picking operations and inventory control within the warehouse. This role manages permanent and outsourced picking teams, ensuring strict adherence to processes, productivity targets, safety standards, and system-driven picking. The Warehouse Supervisor plays a critical role in driving efficiency, accuracy, discipline, and cost-effective service delivery while supporting overall warehouse performance.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Supervise, guide, and support permanent and outsourced picking teams
- Maintain a controlled, disciplined, and efficient working environment
- Conduct daily check-ins to review progress, productivity, and operational challenges
- Ensure all picking activities comply with approved processes and warehouse standards
- Enforce system-driven picking and correct stock selection from designated bays
- Perform random accuracy checks on items and quantities
- Ensure productivity targets and picking deadlines are consistently achieved
- Coordinate with warehouse planners to align picking activities with dispatch schedules
- Prevent delays that may result in additional transport costs or customer service issues
- Monitor picking equipment to ensure availability and safe working condition
- Ensure administrative processes within the picking function are correctly followed
- Compile daily reports on productivity, accuracy, delays, and operational challenges
- Maintain accurate records of staff performance and process deviations
Warehouse Supervision
- Lead, train, and motivate picking teams to achieve high performance
- Enforce company policies, health and safety standards, and disciplinary procedures
- Conduct regular team meetings and toolbox talks
- Provide ongoing feedback and coaching to support continuous improvement
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare daily and weekly reports on productivity, accuracy, and inventory performance
- Monitor and track KPIs including order accuracy, picking turnaround times, and stock variances
- Maintain documentation to support internal controls and external audits
Health and Safety Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free working environment
Housekeeping
- Ensure the warehouse remains clean, orderly, and safe at all times
- Keep aisles, picking areas, and storage zones free of obstructions
- Implement and enforce daily housekeeping routines
- Monitor hygiene, waste disposal, and packaging management standards
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address safety or cleanliness risks
- Ensure tools, equipment, and PPE are stored correctly and maintained in good condition
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field (preferred)
- Proven picking experience within a warehouse environment
- Exposure to supervisory or team leader responsibilities
Skills and Competencies
- Strong supervisory and people management skills
- Knowledge of WMS, MS Office, and inventory control practices
- Good literacy and numerical skills
- Strong planning, coordination, and organizational abilities
- System-driven and process-focused mindset
