About the Role

Position Details
Position: Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
Reporting To: FAS Superintendent
Purpose: To ensure vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with maritime regulations and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure vessels remain mechanically sound throughout voyages without unnecessary returns to port.
- Implement and maintain preventative maintenance systems for all onboard equipment.
- Report any performance issues promptly to the Skipper and Superintendent.
- Maintain adequate stock of spare parts to support uninterrupted operations.
Operations, Watchkeeping and Bunkering
- Oversee the efficient operation of all machinery during sailing and trawling.
- Ensure cargo hold temperatures are consistently maintained as required.
- Enforce proper watchkeeping practices at all times.
- Verify correct fuel grades and lubrication oils are loaded and used.
Administration
- Ensure engineering stores are sufficient for each voyage based on operational needs.
- Maintain and submit all required voyage documentation in line with company and regulatory standards.
- Keep engine room staff informed of operational and maintenance procedures.
- Update and manage the planned maintenance system regularly.
Standards and Safety
- Take full responsibility for the safety of engine room personnel and machinery.
- Ensure all staff are trained in emergency procedures and adhere to safety protocols.
- Maintain compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
- Represent the engineering department during safety inspections and audits.
- Participate in investigations and enquiries conducted by regulatory bodies and the company.
Management and Training
- Provide onboard training and mentorship to engineering staff and cadets.
- Handle disciplinary matters in line with company policies and maritime legislation.
- Address employee grievances in accordance with established procedures.
- Conduct continuous performance assessments of team members.
Requirements
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW certification
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Second Engineer (unlimited)
- Previous experience as a Chief Engineer is an advantage
- Strong technical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent leadership and personnel management skills
- Knowledge of safety standards and maritime regulations
- Proficiency in technical report writing
- Fluent in English (spoken and written)
- Ability to follow company procedures and operational guidelines
