Main Purpose of the Role

The General Manager is accountable for the overall performance of the Ford Silverton Contract Logistics account in South Africa. This role ensures alignment with DSV strategy across all operational areas, including inbound airfreight, while delivering world-class solutions through strong client relationships, operational excellence, financial performance, people leadership, continuous improvement, and innovation.

The role ensures DSV Contract Logistics strategies, objectives, and standards are effectively implemented across all operational areas, with full compliance to company policies and procedures. The General Manager also plays a leading role in developing and expanding DSV’s service offerings within the automotive sector.

Duties and Responsibilities

Client Strategy

  • Develop and execute strategic operating plans aligned to both client and DSV long-term objectives.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate operational, commercial, and service-related risks.
  • Ensure robust operational planning and effective financial control frameworks.

Client Operations

  • Provide full leadership and accountability for all client site operations in Gauteng.
  • Lead the implementation of all operational initiatives, including expanded or new service scope.
  • Retain and grow the client account through service excellence and value creation.
  • Ensure full compliance with DSV standards, including SHERQ and Quality Management Systems.
  • Drive operational synergies to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

Client Relationships

  • Act as the primary DSV representative for client engagement and issue resolution.
  • Ensure consistent delivery against client expectations and SLA commitments.
  • Conduct structured strategic and operational reviews to assess performance and identify growth opportunities.

Commercial and Financial Management

  • Maintain full accountability for Contract Logistics P&L performance and profitability targets.
  • Apply contract and SLA governance to ensure account stability and financial sustainability.
  • Ensure accurate billing, effective debt management, and timely collections.
  • Manage commercial risks, including claims, disputes, and negotiations.
  • Identify and implement initiatives to improve profitability and cost efficiency.

Operational Performance

  • Lead operations teams to consistently achieve agreed performance metrics.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, lean principles, and operational excellence.
  • Manage internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and collaboration.
  • Proactively manage client satisfaction, complaints, damages, and service failures through root cause analysis and corrective actions.

People Management

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing management team.
  • Ensure optimal resourcing across all departments to meet service delivery requirements.
  • Implement consistent performance measurement, feedback, and accountability practices.
  • Coach and mentor leaders to achieve client and business objectives.
  • Maintain individual development plans and succession planning for critical roles.
  • Drive targeted training initiatives to address skills gaps and support operational excellence.

Client Expectations

  • Establish and maintain open, transparent, and constructive communication with the client.
  • Ensure consistent achievement of service level agreements.
  • Lead initiatives to meet and exceed client expectations through innovation and service excellence.

Other Duties and Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Participate in major tender responses and submissions.
  • Provide visible leadership and direction to management teams and staff.
  • Delegate authority and responsibility effectively.
  • Train, develop, and motivate employees toward operational and strategic goals.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide structured feedback.
