Role Overview: R&D WIL Learnership
The R&D WIL Learnership provides practical, hands-on experience in research and development. Learners will assist R&D Technologists and Managers in executing low-complexity projects, pilot plant trials, and laboratory testing. This role develops technical, analytical, and project management skills in a real-world R&D environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in defining, aligning, and executing trial protocols with R&D Technologists and Managers
- Support planning and delivery of R&D projects, covering multiple work streams from prototype development to pilot plant trials
- Conduct routine analytical and product quality tests, including:
- Salt Analysis
- Oil Analysis
- Bulk Density Analysis
- Particle Size Analysis
- Moisture Analysis
- Collect base products from production lines for pilot plant development
- Collaborate with product developers and cross-functional teams
- Support pilot plant operations while maintaining GMP and hygiene standards
- Participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) initiatives
- Conduct seasoning applications to meet specification requirements
- Compile project timelines and coordinate resources for trials
- Support scale-up activities within PepsiCo production plants and co-manufacturers
- Prepare accurate and concise reports with recommendations on ingredients, formulations, and process conditions
- Draft technical documentation such as artwork specifications, process specifications, and finished product standards
- Work with Regulatory to ensure compliance with legal and quality standards
- Participate in online training to enhance business and technical knowledge
Minimum Requirements
- Completion of the theoretical component of a scientific qualification with an average above 60% (Biochemistry, Food Technology, Engineering, or related field)
- South African citizen
- Strong technical and analytical skills with basic knowledge of statistics
- Ability to interpret data and produce actionable insights
- Methodical, accurate, and reliable team player
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Results-driven, persevering, and able to provide timely feedback
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
- Eager to learn, proactive, and able to work independently
- Ability to adapt to change and handle increasing complexity
- High integrity to safeguard company designs, formulations, and processes
- Driving license advantageous

- Strong collaboration and communication skills across R&D and other business functions, including Supply Chain, Operations, Commercialization, and external partners
- Effective negotiation and resource management skills
- Up-to-date technical knowledge with the ability to apply it to projects
- Creative and innovative thinking to generate workable solutions
- Self-starter with ability to work independently and manage complexity
