Role Overview: R&D WIL Learnership
The R&D WIL Learnership provides hands-on experience in research and development, supporting the execution of low-complexity projects, pilot plant trials, and laboratory testing. Learners will assist R&D Technologists and Managers in prototype development, trial execution, and reporting, gaining practical knowledge in product innovation and development processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in defining and aligning trial protocols with R&D Technologists and Managers
- Support the planning and execution of assigned R&D projects within the SA R&D team
- Conduct routine analytical and product quality tests, including salt, oil, moisture, particle size, and bulk density analysis
- Collect base products from production lines for pilot plant development
- Collaborate with product developers and cross-functional teams
- Support pilot plant operations, maintaining GMP and hygiene standards
- Assist with Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) initiatives
- Conduct seasoning applications to ensure compliance with specifications
- Compile project timelines and coordinate resources for trials
- Execute scale-up activities in PepsiCo production plants and selected co-manufacturers
- Deliver accurate and concise project reports, including recommendations on ingredients, formulations, and process conditions
- Draft technical documentation such as artwork specifications, process specifications, and finished product standards
- Work with Regulatory to ensure legal compliance
- Participate in online training programs to enhance business and technical knowledge
Minimum Requirements
- Completion of the theoretical component of a scientific qualification with an average above 60% (Biochemistry, Food Technology, Engineering, or related field)
- South African citizen
- Strong technical and analytical skills with basic knowledge of statistics
- Ability to interpret data and produce actionable insights
- Methodical, accurate, and reliable team player
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Results-driven with perseverance and ability to provide timely feedback
- High self-motivation and organizational skills
- Eager to learn, proactive, and able to work independently
- Ability to adapt to change and handle increasing complexity
- High integrity in safeguarding company designs, formulations, and processes
- Driving license advantageous
Preferred Qualifications
- Effective collaboration and communication skills across R&D and other business functions, including Supply Chain, Operations, Commercialization, and external partners
- Negotiation skills for effective resource utilization
- Up-to-date knowledge of technology with the ability to apply it in projects
- Creative thinking to generate innovative and practical solutions
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage complexity
