Diesel Mechanic – Purpose of the Role

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing all customer service work, including maintenance and repairs, in accordance with Value job cards. This role ensures vehicles are serviced to manufacturer specifications, identifies faults and irregularities, and maintains a safe, efficient, and professional workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct visual inspections and onboard diagnostics during pre-diagnosis
• Review workshop job cards for accuracy and clarity before commencing work
• Adhere to flat rates and repair standards for all jobs
• Attend to office-hour and after-hour breakdowns as required
• Ensure all parts, including consumables like engine oils, are correctly booked to the job card
• Prepare service bays and necessary equipment and parts for maintenance and repairs
• Perform all maintenance and repair services according to manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules
• Conduct visual inspections, calibrations, and adjustments as required
• Identify deviations, unusual wear, or damage and report to the Workshop Foreman while updating orders
• Reset maintenance systems and prepare dismantled parts for return to suppliers or reconditioning
• Inspect dismantled parts and replace with new or reconditioned components as necessary
• Return unusable parts and accurately document all work performed
• Assess vehicles against production standards and evaluate technical condition
• Perform final checks using testing and measuring equipment to ensure vehicles are fully repaired, roadworthy, and reliable
• Maintain professional conduct and adherence to company dress code and SOPs
• Support operational functions as required
• Maintain daily housekeeping and comply with health and safety standards

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• Trade-tested Commercial Vehicle Diesel Technician

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to apply appropriate techniques and strategies to maintain a professional workshop environment
• Capability to analyse vehicle usage patterns and make basic inferences
• Understanding of business principles relevant to own work area
• Ability to interact directly with customers in a professional manner
• Competence in implementing business principles in own work area
• Awareness of hazards and ability to handle them with guidance
• Knowledge and application of basic health and safety procedures under supervision
